Critique Services and Writing Support

About Me

Before I co-wrote my first novel Beautiful Creatures on a dare from seven teens, I was a teacher. Helping people develop their strengths so they can pursue their dreams is one of my passions, and I would love to help you develop your story. Whether you’re a new writer who needs help with outlining and plotting or you’re an experienced author who needs a critique on the first 10,000 words of your manuscript, I’m here to help.

I’ve written everything from prose novels and graphic novels to comic book scripts and TV scripts. While I’m best known for my YA prose and graphic novels, I also write thrillers, steamy romance, and comics for adults. My strengths as a writer are voice, plot development, world building, dialogue, and creating memorable characters that resonate with readers.

My Experience

I’m a #1 New York Times, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and international bestselling author and comic book writer. I’ve published 13 prose novels and 5 graphic novels, in 51 countries and 38 languages, and my books have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Beautiful Creatures was a finalist for the ALA’s William C. Morris Debut Author Award, a SCIBA Award Finalist, Amazon’s #1 Teen Book of 2009 and #5 on the Editor’s Top 100 List, a YALSA “Teen Top Ten” Pick, and a New York Public Library’s “Books for the Teen Age” selection. My novels are also Bram Stoker Award nominees, Texas Lone Star List selections, and state reading award winners.

My New York Times and USA Today bestselling Teen Titans graphic novel series (with artist Gabriel Picolo) for DC has sold over 450,000 copies and the titles are Junior Library Guild selections, YALSA “Great Graphic Novels for Teens” and YALSA “Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers” selections. My DC Black Label comic Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity (with artists Mico Suayan, Jason Badower, and Annette Kwok) was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for superior achievement in horror writing.

Am I Right For You?

An editor can’t be the perfect fit for every writer or manuscript. I want to help you write the best story possible—the story you’ve been dreaming about (or having nightmares about, depending on the genre). Powerful stories let readers escape into new worlds and experience life through the eyes of the characters. They keep us on the edges of our seats and stick with us long after we finish the last page of the book. That’s the kind of story I want to help you craft.

My favorite genres are romance (especially romantasy, dark romance, and romantic suspense) urban fantasy, and thrillers, but I read everything! I love a good trope (they’re popular for a reason), and I hated Lost after Season 1.

What Other Writers Think

“Kami is extremely generous with her energy, practical in her approach, and insanely knowledgeable about the craft of writing graphic novels. She understands young readers in a deep and unique way, and she’s an astute analyst of the business of publishing, as well.”
E. Lockhart, #1 New York Times bestselling and National Book Award-nominated author of We Were Liars and Printz Award honor book The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks

“Kami Garcia is a brilliant woman equally inspirational for her knowledge of craft and the energy she brings to every interaction. Just being around the sound of her voice makes me want to write and write better.
Brian Michael Bendis, New York Times bestselling author and writer/co-creator of Marvel’s Miles Morales and the Spider-verse, and Jessica Jones

“It is one thing to be a writer, and quite another to be as versatile and adaptive as Kami Garcia. Throughout her career, she has been able to pivot from writing lush, romantic fantasies like Beautiful Creatures to intense horror/thrillers like Unbreakable to incredibly action-packed and heartfelt Teen Titans graphic novels. Not only am I a fan of Kami’s work, I admire her ability to be both unerringly honest and deeply compassionate with her feedback. She has always nurtured aspiring writers and been generous with her time and talents. It is a rare combination of traits in a writer, and anyone would be lucky to have Kami’s eyes on their work.
Marie Lu, New York Times bestselling author of the Legend series and The Young Elites series

“Kami Garcia is a magnetic storyteller. Her characters have heart and breath and so much life, and I will read absolutely anything she writes. She is also a wonderful critique partner. Honest, supportive, quick-thinking, savvy, deep, and wise. Her knowledge knows no bounds! My words are everything to me. And Kami is one of the few people on earth I trust with them.
Jennifer Niven, Emmy Award-winning writer and #1 New York Times bestselling author of All the Bright Places and Holding Up the Universe

Known for her masterful plotting and breathless storytelling, Kami Garcia is a powerhouse. She brings wisdom and expertise to every novel, and a range of ability that shines through in everything she’s written.”
Tahereh Mafi, #1 New York Times bestselling and National Book Award-nominated author of the Shatter Me series and An Emotion of Great Delight

“Whenever I am struggling with a book, Kami is my first call. She has such a mastery of plot and emotion. She’s unfailingly honest and offers concrete questions and solutions that can elevate any story.
Danielle Paige, New York Times bestselling author of the Dorothy Must Die series

“Kami Garcia is an enormously gifted writer. A natural shapeshifter who can tackle any genre, her books are a masterclass in voice, character, and pacing.”
Ransom Riggs, #1 New York Times and international bestselling author of the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children novels

“Kami Garcia is one of the most gifted story architects I’ve ever met. She has a rare talent that can both see right through to the heart of a story and also the most thrilling ways to dramatize it.”
Gwenda Bond, New York Times bestselling author of The Date from Hell and Stranger Things: Suspicious Minds

Everyone should be so lucky to have Kami Garcia in their corner. I am, and it has absolutely made me a better writer.”
Sam Humphries, writer of Harley Quinn and writer/co-creator of Blackbird.

I once went to Kami with a plot so tangled and broken that I could barely stand to talk about it. She gave me something better than encouragement: She gave me a solution. I knew from Kami’s novels what a visceral, wide-ranging storyteller she is, but I had no idea how feisty and brilliant she is at pulling stuff out of writers that they didn’t even know they had in them.
Jeff Giles, author of The Edge of Everything & The Terrorist’s Son
