Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451 in the basement of the UCLA library, on a typewriter that cost a dime a half hour, during his lunch breaks. In the end it cost him $9.80 to write the first draft of one of the greatest novels ever written.
Bradbury was a fantasy/ sci-fi writer before the genre was widely read or respected. Originally, his work was published in the pulp magazines Thrilling Wonder Stories, Weird Tales & Astounding Science Fiction. He wrote because he had to – maybe the same reason we all write.
"My stories run up and bite me on the leg – I respond by writing down everything that goes on during the bite. When I finish, the idea lets go and runs off."
– Ray Bradbury
Fahrenheit 451 is my favorite Bradbury novel, but The Illustrated Man and Dandelion Wine are close seconds.
